Okay, it’s done, proofed now for the fourth time. If there are any errors now, I’ll be surprised. Well, maybe a few but no more that a professionally-proofed book.

One thing I have learnt whilst friends and editors have been proofing, there’s a fair degree of disagreement regarding the structure of our language. Some are irritated by split infinitives, others by commas being used with, and. Someone else didn’t take kindly to my, occasional, long sentences. But, my greatest lesson was, not to be swayed by opinion on how to tell my story. If I allowed that, it wouldn’t be mine any more.

Proof number two

So, if I had checked the first proof properly, I wouldn’t have had to scrap the first print run. Thankfully it was only a small run of 20 for family. Nevertheless, unnecessary cost.

The latest proof, some 10 weeks after the first, has delayed proper advertising and sales. However, I am pleased with the revisions as I took the opportunity to change THE GREATEST GIFT slightly to assist my sequel DRIFTING SANDS, now well under way and building nicely into a thrilling adventure.

Anyway, back to book one, now available in paparback, eBook and ePub versions from my website from next week. http://www.balneaves.co.uk

Following on from my post, ‘The greatest errors’, we’re off again to the printers.

A lesson learnt I think. Don’t be too anxious to see yourself in print, get it right and then print. There will always be a few typos but 34 is way too many.

Well, the proof is here and it’s looking good. The cover sits well and is evenly set round the spine, all the chapters start on facing pages as planned, the numbering works and the finished book is 25mm thick.

It is so pleasing to see the culmination of five years work in my hand.
